Amazon’s Third Generation Kindle Sells Out
When Apple launched it’s iPad tablet computer, it was widely predicted that it would see the death of Amazon’s hugely successful Kindle reader by many business analysts. However, if present sales figures are anything to go by, demand is as high as ever.
The newly upgraded third generation Kindle readers have now sold out and buyers face the prospect of a three to four week wait before their readers are shipped to them. The latest upgrades include:
- A new high contrast e-ink technology display
- A doubling of memory from 2GB to 4GB
- Smaller overall dimensions
- Choice of white or graphite body colors
- 20% faster page turns
- Extended battery life
One of the most significant changes is perhaps the introduction of a new Wi-Fi only Kindle for users who don’t see the need for 3G connectivity. This is on offer for just $139 – the 3G plus Wi-Fi model retails at $189.
It looks as if the Kindle can survive quite nicely alongside the iPad. Whether the same can be said for other e-book readers like the Nook or Sony’s various offerings remains to be seen.
