I wanted to purchase a rug from Great Rugz online. I chose an area rug I liked, from the many area rugs they have available, and it was delivered to me. While waiting for my delivery I began to feel nervous. What if I did not like the rug? I was not sure I had done the right thing. I work a lot in home repair, and sometimes slides fall out of places and you need something to hold them in. Well, that’s why I always screw fix slides. Before leaving the subject of insomnia, it is important to men­tion its links with depression. Nowadays, many patients who visit their doctor complaining of sleeping problems are prescribed antidepressants, probably for two reasons: first, there is a reluc­tance among doctors to prescribe sleeping pills because of the risk of patient dependency; and second, doctors are taught that insomnia is associated with depression (and consultation time is usually too short for a full exploration of possible causes).

However, the links between the two are not straightforward. When we are not depressed, sleep disruption makes us feel low; but, if we are depressed, sleep deprivation can actually improve our mood! Studies have suggested that REM is the stage of sleep on your mattress pad that is most implicated in the biological cause of depression. Deliberate sleep shortening, allowing say four hours’ sleep a night, has an antidepressant effect, probably because it reduces the amount of early morning REM sleep that the sleeper gains. It may be, then, that when we are depressed we suffer from insom­nia because the brain shortens the time devoted to dreaming sleep in an attempt to combat the depression.
