Just because celebrities are wearing them, doesn’t mean we all have to wear them.
A new school
year heralds new fashion trends, but deciphering the good from the bad, and
sifting out the ‘new look' from a ‘has-been', has never been an easy thing.
It's true that fashion is always cyclical. Reinterpretations (as it's politely
called in the fashion world) become key elements in the design fulcrum of
fashion houses with many citing ‘Old Hollywood Glamour' and ‘1920s' as their
inspiration. HOOKED list the top 5-fashion fad that should never be brought
back to life.

The Fashion Tribes of NUS |

Meandering our way
around the snaking paths between lecture halls, tutorial groups and canteens,
we are bound to see other dressed homosapiens out and about minding their own
business. Yet there are some amongst us who cannot help but pass biting remarks
over some choices of clothing that were obviously made in the dark. It is in
our duty as fashion journalists to remind the masses that the importance of
clothes can never be over emphasized because we ALL have skin, but only a select
few have a good wardrobe.
Other than the
surface distinction of one faculty from the other, there has been a subtle yet
growing trend amongst the student population of subscribing to particular fashion tribes. HOOKED uncovers the dogma and code of conduct for each of the 5
major/very queer tribes so that you can assimilate effortlessly into the world of
the decently(indecently) dressed.

Delusions aside, it's a fact that people do judge a book by its cover. First impressions do count - especially if you are eager to clinch that dream job. The way you dress at your first corporate interview or your first day at work can help to determine the way you present yourself and your employer's first impression towards you. You wouldn't want to dress over the top; neither do you want to look like a fashion disaster.
HOOKED will teach you how to dress in style - fashionable yet appropriate for the corporate world.

Fashionable Elites or Elitist Fashion? |
|
Written by Rohaizatul Azhar

Years ago, when I was in secondary school, I remember claiming the top spot of the bottom tier in my Mathematics and Science classes with alarming regularity. I could never understand what my tutor was droning on about and it bore me to death. However, I knew even back then that there is only one thing that would make a difference to my life. Ok, I might be exaggerating a wee bit but I think you get the idea.
Fashion is my (YSL) opium - it is my antidote to
the otherwise mundane repetitions we all like to call school life. I
never thought twice about spending my miserable allowance on the
various fashion magazines – or anything fashion related for that matter
- that I could get my hands on instead of assessment books, or a new
calculator.
To date, I believe I was right. I mean, unlike having a
complete Dior Homme wardrobe, knowledge of covalent bonds is hardly
ever going to make me look good.

Fashion houses ruthlessly churn out new trends each season to coyly tease our senses, all while constructing an endless pursuit which our financial capabilities fall terribly short of. Yet if one has a keen sense of style, you would realize how transient most of these trends actually are.
HOOKED thus brings you an article to intervene in your fashion addict disastrous ways.

Quirky Fashion Has Its Perks! |

We all have some kind of unspoken fear of pushing the envelope when it comes to experimenting with fashion. Yet, at the back of our minds we constantly want to be that prominent representative of the central art piece. Don't you sometimes wish that you could pull off wearing an outfit you see on the catwalks in real life? You know, being seen, be different and be the next head turner in that oh-so-unique outfit? Boys, you know you want it too and it's not just us girls.
We at HOOKED would love to give you a few genres of styles to follow but that is being textbook and where's the fun in that? Save yourself from the embarrassments of looking like a street performer by capturing the essence of specific genres and certain looks instead. Here's how.

Grow Out of Fashion Victimhood |
|
Written by Marissa Chen

"Less is more" is the strategy of choice where important figures are concerned - the essential 3Rs of environmental conservation, for one, or the number of RBR-assigned readings per module (and we wonder why people are reluctant to bid for Literature courses?). Every little bit goes a mighty long way, but scaling down always constitutes a big step for those who are accustomed to supersizing everything from their Big Macs to their monthly credit statements.
Most unfortunately for fad-ODing fashion slaves, dressing to overkill is now a practice observed only by the real rehab connoisseurs (see below). This year, making the cut engenders precisely this - decisive downsizing and clever trend adaptations aimed at paving the way for more functional (and economical) wardrobe moderations. HOOKED shows you how.
