Fake it 'til you make it: The Elitist Complex |
|
Written by Alicia Tan and Michelle Lim

These days, in NUS, it seems like brands are all the rage – and not just any old brands, mind you (yes, OP isn’t that kind of brand)! We’re talking about the real deal here: from Louis Vuitton (affectionately called “LV”), Chanel, Gucci, Longchamp to the preppy upper-middleclass of Abercrombie and Fitch, Banana Republic, JuicyCouture and the like.
So what exactly fires these brand-babies up so much to the extent that they’ll take on bratty tuition kids, scrimp and save every penny to that S$450 pair of Chanel shades?
HOOKED explores this issue from two differing camps - the atas (read: high-class) snob who is willing to do anything to own anything from Christian Dior to Prada versus the easily-contented slob who is happy wearing even a S$10 shirt from pasar malam, as long as they are comfortable.
Which camp are you on?

The Timelessness of Our Campuses |
|
Written by Parvinder Gill
|
In Singapore, it is easy for a new visitor to get overwhelmed by our towering skyscrapers and write our city off as yet another "concrete jungle". A more discerning visitor, who takes the time to explore the city would discover what the locals have already known, that is, that there is a unique blend of old and new integrated in the architectural footprint of the nation.
Admittedly, it took us a while to realize that modernity need not always be in conflict or in opposition to age-old, enduring styles but can be complementary. Heritage zones started propping up in some of the oldest parts of the city, colonial-style bungalows/buildings were refurbished with minor cosmetic changes made to their white-washed exteriors; some of them were even transformed to food and beverage outlets and hotels.
And NUS proved not to be far behind in the change as well.

Wacky Modules in NUS - For Real? |
|
Written by Loh Huilin
|
I think this is probably something that has been on the tips of our
tongues, which makes us want to spit out from time to time – the quirkiest
modules offered in good ol’ NUS!
Maybe that’s the difference between
the other universities N’US.
Now that we are talking about oddity, it is about time we throw away all
politically correct thoughts and think a little bit more (you can
laugh too) about the biggest questions that come to mind when noticing
some out-of-the-world modules out there.

A Day in the Life of an NUSloth |
|
Written by Nur Liyana
|
According to our sources, there's
this huge myth circulating JCs that undergrads party hard and study
harder - or is that the other way around? No matter. But just as how
the Titanic was thought to be unsinkable, The Powers That Be have a
certain sense of humor (or lack thereof) regarding matters such as these.
So here's a peek into the flip-side of undergraduate life, whose aim
is to make it through university with as little studying as possible.

Always being around school during daylight but seldom after night falls when the stars come out to play, one’s mindset does not change as quickly, thinking that NUS is safe anytime of the day, anywhere. However, is it really or are we at HOOKED making a brouhaha over nothing at all?
