Unconventional Undertakings |

Written by Archana Achamangalam & Lee Wei Fen

It has often been repeated that what is taught in school is never really used in the workplace. Well, I certainly hope that it is true because I am beginning to doubt how my unnaturally long lab reports will ever help me in my life.
For everyone who hasn't decided where your passion lies or if your passion is a far cry from your major, there are real life examples of graduates who have not let the scope of their degree limit their scope in life.

A Socialite's Tale: An Interview with Dr. Georgia Lee |
|
Written by Charmaine Tan
|
|
As vicarious consumers of gossips on the lives of the rich and famous, which are regularly fed to us courtesy of celebrity gossip magazines and the paparazzi, we tend to view these high-society people through a myopic lens, especially with the gloss and shine on the magazines, potent enough to permeate our senses.
As a result, when we judge those people who are prominent fixtures in high society galas, we are fixated on their appearance, developing preconceived notions about their characters, based primarily on the way they look. Unfair? Absolutely.
Therefore, HOOKED has decided to jump off the bandwagon of generic stereotyping by featuring a well-known local socialite Dr. Georgia Lee, who has proven to have more depth in personality and in her professional life than most of us non-socialites have had thus far.

"We're just into toys, whether it's motorcycles or race cars or computers. I've got the Palm Pilot right here with me, I've got the world's smallest phone. Maybe it's just because I'm still a big little kid and I just love toys, you know?" - Catherine Bell
Unlike Catherine Bell, most of us would probably not have the Palm Pilot and the world's smallest phone with us. What most of us do have, though, is a closet straining under the weight of old, battered toys that we are unwilling to dispose of.
Be it the classic favorite board game Monopoly or the simple deck of cards, toys are treasured repositories of memories. As we age, these toys might be kept out of sight and remain dormant in our minds but the memories that we have of the countless hours spent playing with them never really go away. They serve as perfect fodder for reminiscence during those slow days over a cup of coffee or tea.
Hooked set out to ask several of our NUS students the toys that were able to send them on a trip down memory lane.

Will the Real Steven Lim Please Stand Up? |
|
Written by Alicia Tan and Huang Yifang
|
The word "oddball" has ambivalent connotations, one that implies eccentricity and strangeness, yet it can also be taken to mean a unique individual - one who usually has no qualms about going against social norms. The latter is what probably best describes Steven Lim (of Singapore Idol fame): His individuality stands out in any crowd, and he isn't afraid to speak his mind.
HOOKED sat down with the local ‘celebrity' to see if being odd is truly more perception than truth.
