Now that we’ve all gotten ourselves into the most established
institution on sunny island Singapore (yes, the one that’s in the Top
20 QS World University Rankings), let’s show the others that we not
only outwit and outlast our competitors academically, we make even
stronger contenders in the field of out-dressing with our party clothes
(unfortunately, the same can’t be said for our school get-up).
The question is - how?
Well, bearing
in mind the function of clothes as concealment, attraction and
individual expression, we take inspirations from Oscar suits and
dresses, add a dash of MTV style to them, and come up with a
delightfully simple dressing mantra – sleek and shine.

Femme Fatale: The Dangerous Seduction of the Sarong Party Girl |
|
Written by Rohaizatul Azhar & Parvinder Gill
|
The Sarong Party Girl, typified by her tanned complexion, questionable
foreign-accented English, provocative attire and her general preference
for dating Caucasian males, has become an idiosyncratic feature of our
society in Singapore.
In fact, the Sarong Party Girl phenomenon dates
back to the pre-independence period in our history. When the British
forces were still present in colonial Singapore in the 60s, they sought
the charms of the local ladies and invited them to the parties that
they organized. Since the sarong (i.e. cloth that is wrapped around
one’s waist to function as a skirt) was a staple clothing item in the
past, these ladies were naturally decked out in their best sarongs in
these parties.
Hence, the name Sarong Party Girl.

Let us paint a picture - you are invited to a party with all your
friends. You look gorgeous! There is music, alcohol…you name it, they have it!
How
wild do you suppose you can afford to get? Does partying necessarily
mean losing consciousness? Can trusting other people with your drink be a
choice, in this day and age of Rohypnol or 'Roofies'? Are you afraid of people thinking that you are un-cool if you said 'No'? If being
cautious means being safe, then maybe we need to rethink our
definitions of cool.
The picture is no longer as rosy as it was! Now, take a road trip with hooked down the dark side of parties.

Going green has been invading our senses recently. With Live Earth concerts and bags screaming environmental-friendly slogans becoming It bags, it has become rather difficult to sidestep the issue.
Before all of us start to pledge our allegiance to environmental causes, HOOKED thinks it's important that we first try to understand the complexities masked under the word - environmentalism.
The first step in our education was courtesy of the recent Interdisciplinary Forum on Global Warming and Climate Change, organised by NUSSU S.A.V.E (Students Against Violation of the Earth).

Voice Of A Murderer: A True Story |
|
Written by Loh Huilin
|
This film is not for the faint-hearted.
And by that, I am not referring to those who cannot stomach blood spilling scenes or grotesque skin-crawling psychotic murders, but those whose hearts cannot take the starkly truthful ending of tragedies, especially when it is a remake of a true story.
