Page 1 of 2 Consisting of four pretty girls, it is easy to stereotype Cherry Boom
as a typical female pop group. But looks can be deceiving, as Cherry Boom is
not only Taiwan's first professional all-girl rock band, it is also one of
the upcoming bands you should watch out for.
Hooked speaks to them over the
phone, to find that their latest album "乖乖" (Goodie Goodie), like their appearance, is more than meets the eye.
Goodie Goodies?
They sound sweet and look even sweeter, so it can be hard to imagine these girls are the ones who wrote the slightly morbid lyrics to their entire album. "Goodie Goodie" may seem like a happy, mild song title but read into the lyrics and you'll find that Cherry Boom actually wants to express their rebellion against acting cute. "乖" (goodie) by itself means being nice or good, but put both together and the term "Goodie Goodie" has a sense of beguilement or hypocrisy.
"We want to show (that) we are against such behavior and thus this is also the title of our new album," Zha Zha, lead singer of the group, emphasized.
Their new rock album from Universal Music consists of ten new songs, infused with stronger rock elements this time around.
"One (of the rock songs) is "受夠" (Enough), but not just that. We've also experimented with sentimental songs in this album, and that's one big difference between this album and our first one."
Rebels and proud of it!
Starting a band isn't easy, especially if you have to juggle your studies along with all the practices and gigs. But these four girls, now in their early twenties, managed to group together in 2003, when they were all students. By 2006, they have become one of the top ten most popular new bands chosen online, and even performed with the infamous Taiwanese singer, Zhang Zhen Yue. However, it has not been all smooth-sailing for these rockers.
Gua, the guitarist, encountered fierce protests from her family for deciding to be in the band.
"My parents kept asking me why I am so rebellious when I'm not even a teenager anymore," she laughed.
"Some people may think of us as being rebellious, but truthfully, our songs are just about us in real-life, how we behave according to our feelings. We want our listeners to feel our songs, (and) get to know the real us through them."
