Hot Fuzz: A B-grade movie? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Charmaine Tay
In all honesty, the title "Hot Fuzz" first gave me an impression of a cheesy B-grade show, out to make a quick buck. However, upon hearing that it was a British movie, my hopes were lifted slightly; after all...the famous British wit ranks highly on my enjoyment quotient.

So what does "Hot Fuzz" mean, anyway? Now, everyone knows "hot", but "fuzz" can refer to either a fine covering of hair or fur, i.e. the much-dreaded regrowth of hair on one's waxed legs, or the British slang for "police".

However, while Hot Fuzz isn't big on the eye candy factor, it certainly makes up for its plot development and pace. Simon Pegg plays the lead as Nicholas Angel, an ace cop with a fantastic track record and the model police officer. In fact, he is so good at his job that it makes everyone else pale in comparison. Thus, this leads to his relocation to a quiet and quaint little town, where everything is not as it seems.

When one compares Angel's workaholic attitude to the townsfolk's laidback one, it's enough to make a grown man burst in frustration or into tears, but Angel doesn't buckle one bit, opting to keep on going against the odds to unravel the town's secrets.

Every hero needs a sidekick and Nick Frost, who plays Danny Butterman, a bumbling cop whose worldview of policing comes solely from watching action movies like Bad Boys. His role certainly played off Angel's straight-laced, "everything by the rules" character.

The actors in Hot Fuzz have great comedic timing and are able to ham it up with a straight face, leading to much laughter throughout the movie. The plot twist towards the end is hilarious, providing much entertainment at the ludicrous scenes that play out.

Additionally, the slow-motion, exaggerated gun fights and shoot-outs seem to be paying respect, yet at the same time, poking fun at Hollywood's action scenes where the impossible is possible.

The only disappointment was that the dialogue is not as sharp as it could have been, when one compares to typical Brit humour. There are few truly snappy come-backs; however, this is much of an improvement when compared to the usual Hollywood comedies, with the watered-down jokes and toilet humour.

Overall, Hot Fuzz was an enjoyable movie with good laughs and would be enjoyed by most, if not all. It is definitely recommended for those who are tired of the stale Hollywood action flick fare. hooked
