Written by Shawn Woo

This writer had the unenviable task of going to a nightclub to cover a ladies fashion label.

Why unenviable? ‘Cuz this involved me actually scrutinizing the clothes, without paying attention to the runway models wearing the clothes.

But duty calls, and I grudgingly went ahead.

On 11 July, Velvet Dragon played host to "Models in Fashion", an exclusive showcase for fashion labels to parade their latest designs

Fitting then that, on this particular Ladies' Night, KAI, one of Singapore's rising (women's) fashion labels, would be displaying its wares.

KAI, the label is in fact named after Kai, the designer. Having started on her designs back in 2001, the former Laselle-SIA International student followed her passion to found her own self-titled label in 2003. The opening of KAI's flagship store at The Heeren was soon followed by the unveiling of the Bugis Junction outlet, and both stores are doing brisk business.

In her own words, Kai specialises in "seductively modern, limited edition garments for women above 20," with several purely one-of-a-kind designs. So ladies, if you won't be caught dead wearing a dress that someone else owns, KAI's the place for you!

For "Models in Fashion", the girls strutted their stuff in 30 of KAI's latest designs. Although their stores feature a mix of casual/work clothing, the theme of tonight was club-wear for the young and hip, an excellent choice for NUS undergrads enjoying the last of their long holidays.

One thing to note about Kai's work is that she knows how women can make use of their best assets. In essence, there is a colour, style and shape to suit everybody, for every occasion.

This was clearly on display during the fashion show. The models were decked out in an assortment of tank tops, spag-straps, halters and the like, emphasizing bronzed backs and shoulders. Tight jeans, thigh skimming shorts and tiny skirts, similarly accentuating legs that went on forever.

As the typical Wed-night retro music ("Whooaa-oooaaa, Square Rooooms!") filled the air, you could tell instantly that these flirty clothes are perfect for a girls' night out, with all the de riguer club-hopping, Cosmopolitan-sipping and dude-scoping.

I'm no metrosexual/fashion expert, but girls, if you're looking for fancy togs at mid-range prices, then KAI's the place for you. hooked
