Written by Joanne Lim
Like every John Hughes movie, varsity sartorial-ism is segregated into three major portions - the cool kids, the rebels, and the misfits.

To avoid being typecast into the latter category, HOOKED presents the ultimate cheat-sheet to scaling the heights of collegiate-cool fashion.

Frankly, I cannot even remember when was the last time I got up at the sound of my alarm just to snooze it for some 10 more minutes and whoops, I'm late for school...again. It seems like an undergraduate's nightmare - of me (or you) battling with the ‘snooze' button, hopping right into the convenient cab, crossing my fingers that the CTE, PIE or ECP, which we travel on, is as smooth as the Airport runway - is back.

Well alright, I did not mean to start off so morbid. Perhaps I was over-generalizing on the waking up part, since there are so many different kinds of students around us. And I just happen to be the rotten stale egg.

It really is a pain trying to pick your clothes for school on top of being late for your 8am lecture! We want to look our best, however, since girls will always be girls, we take our own sweet time 99% of the time. So we end up walking into the LT fashionably late at 8.45am (but walking with our best foot forward of course). Before you know it, half the lecture has gone by and in the next 10 minutes, the lecturer will announce for break.

Since our dressing speaks a thousand words about us, we should try to put more thought into dressing up for school. Benjamin Franklin once said that ‘Eat to please thyself, but DRESS to please others'. So, how do I dress to please others yet fulfill my responsibilities as a student - being punctual?

Let's take a beauty peek into some of the fashionable yet staple school wear for the upcoming semester.

Women's Staple Wear 1101E - Denim

I know it is hard to pick a pair of drainpipes off the shelves for fear of witnessing your own reflection in the mirror. But hey, nothing beats carrying yourself with confidence and after all, confident girls are hot property!

skinny1

Skinny jeans are all the rage this season and it matches easily with a fitting top or a nice  flowing tunic. In fact, jeans are an undergraduate's staple wear for both the chicks and the lads.

If you don't want to jump on the bandwagon for skinny jeans, opt for a flattering straight cut in dark wash to give a slimmer silhouette, for those with a heavier bottom.

skirt1

If you girls want to reveal a little more, grab a pair of denim skirts. Note: avoid miniskirts unless you want to risk maximum exposure along the stairs.

Women's Staple Wear 2101E - Tees and Tops

Nice groovy tees with jeans is probably the basic wear for us students and needless to say, a common sight. But common does not equate to mean boring!

Slogan tees allow the world to notice you. However, personally, I would stay clear of printed tees screaming cheesy statements like:

boyfriendloveyoulongtime

Yes, we know you are together with your other half for a reason and yes, we know you love him and it is for a long time. But let's leave the mushy stuff between yourselves, alright? Slogan tees are fine - just make sure they're not sickeningly sweet or too crude for school.

These simple cotton tops are a breeze to find, and adds colour to your wardrobe. It'll take you from school to town easily (no camp tees to town, please).

From colourful tank tops, to pretty printed girlish tees and of course, graffiti inspired pieces, there's something to fit each of your own fashion taste! With a myriad of tops available online like the infamous threadless tees to our very own bazaar-bargain tees, stock up on your staples now.

Women's Staple Wear 3101E - Flats

You really don't want to find yourself tripping over your pair of 4-inch heels while chasing for the internal shuttle or worse, drilling those deadly heels on someone else's feet aboard the bus! The buzz in many fashion magazines is that flat is the new fad, and it's definitely a staple for school.

madrid1        The most common flats you'll find is the Madrid Birkenstocks. Almost every other girl owns a pair, if not 2 (granted, some of them aren't real Birkies)! So, for the freshmen who happens to stumble upon this article, Birkies have fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how you see it) become an undergraduate's best friend.

Well, aside from the rather hefty price, I must salute to this pair of footwear. Their comfort level is beyond any tom, dick or harry's imitations you find. Agreed?

havis1

For a cheaper alternative, there is Havaianas to save the day! Besides, it is easily available in most New Urban Male stores in town, or you could go E-shopping!

I know that most undergraduates might still find the above too unfriendly for their finances but hey, we don't need to always jump on the fashion bandwagon.

Ultimately, I am here to drive the message that flats are fab for school (on non-presentation days, that is)!
