Emote yourself, don't repress yourself!
The emo subculture is associated with emo music but also extends into appearance, behavior, and perspectives on life. The term emo is loosely linked with emotionally charged punk rock, however it originally meant emotional hardcore - modern 'emo' music is more of a branch off from what it started out as. Most emos like underground or indie music.
Emo has branched out from punk/indie and so rise the fashion icons in its stars such as Pete Doherty of Babyshambles fame (or more recently, as the coke-addict boyfriend of supermodel and fashion icon, Kate Moss).
There are so many subcategories of emo dressing that it is impossible to list them all. Here are some:
HOOKED on "How to dress nerdy-emo":
- 1. Short hair. Style it messy, but not spikey.
- 2. Horn-rim/thick black frames/cat eye glasses (this works for all three types).
- 3. Thin, tight, solid dark color v-neck sweaters. I call them Grandpa sweaters.
- 4. Band shirts.
- 5. Argyle socks.
- 6. Black converse shoes
HOOKED on "How to dress indie-emo":
- 1. Dyed-black short hair with bangs short and cut straight across the forehead. Spiky in the back, slightly greasy.
- 2. Piercings. The more, the better.
- 3. Jewellery. The more, the better. Beads, etc.
- 4. Tight, faded shirts with random slogans. It should look like it could have been bought at a thrift store or Chatuchak market but you didn't (but you really did). It takes a while to master that one.
- 5. Tight pants, sometimes cuffed once or twice but never more!
- 6. Black or blue converse shoes.
With these tips in mind, one important rule reigns supreme above all others - You've got to have the right attitude. My advice is simple. Wear what you think works for you. And if you don't mind the gawking and the staring, then go right ahead - I know I have!
In the words of Shakespeare himself, "if music be the food of love, play dress up!" Ok, I know he didn't exactly say that but oh well! HOOKED
