The Perfect Supernatural Ten PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nur Rashidah
What’s a supernatural issue without a list of the top ten horror movies of our time? Well not much, I say.

Thus, ladies and gentlemen, in the name of journalism, I have put aside my personal fears, trawled the Net and pestered horror movie buffs to present the ten most ultimate.

My word of advice - Just don’t watch them alone at night.

10) Dawn of the Dead

What’s more terrifying than zombies? Fast zombies. In the past, there was always that hope that you could outrun them (though for some weird reason, the victims never do). But in this film, they can run - and fast too. Not too shabby. It makes the cut at no. 10.

9) Saw

Although the Saw series is primarily gore than horror, Jigsaw and his pure sadism is enough to horrify you no end. Of the three movies, I feel that Saw 1 is the best (and judging by most movie reviews too).

It seems that no. 2 lacked originality and was not as interesting as the first. Nevertheless, watching fellow human beings suffer as they play Jigsaw’s twisted game is still revolting.

8) Chuckie

Let’s come clean, shall we? Dolls, especially the ones that look like Chuckie, are C-R-E-E-P-Y. We’re always wondering - what if they come to life? And we’re not talking Barney-comes-to-life kind of dolls but bloodthirsty ones.

A doll that kills with absolutely no remorse – it’s your childhood's worst nightmare.

7) Psycho

psychomp         I’m talking about the classic version, not the '90s one.

Psycho is best known for the infamous shower scene where Norman Bates, dressed as his mother, creeps up to the shower curtain and stabs a butcher knife into the girl.

And let’s not forget the accompanying theme song…

6) The Eye

I think what makes this movie scary is that it was based on a true story. After watching the movie, I developed a phobia of lifts, especially those that have the glass window thing.

You know, in fact, till now I think I still have not gotten over that…

5) Sixth Sense

        "I see dead people".

Years after the movie was released, people still repeat this oh-so-famous line. The pain of a young boy forced to see the dead. Haley Joel Osment is phenomenal in the movie.

I love how the movie has a twist at the end and it manages to differentiate itself from other horror films by not resorting to cheap scare tactics.

Oh! And did you see young Mischa Barton as the vomiting girl? Spectacularly spine-chilling.

4) Nightmare on Elm Street

Hoo, boy. Who DOESN’T know Freddy Krueger? With his razor sharp knife-fingers and badly charred face, the movie plays on our insecurity and fear of being alone at home in the night.

Worst of all, he attacks teenagers…

3) The Ring

No, no, not the American version, the Japanese one.

"You have got to respect the Japanese. They know the way of the samurai."

And they certainly know the way to make a true horror classic. This is the movie that gave birth to Sadako. It spawned Sadako look-alikes in all horror movies.

White gown and ultra-long black hair - it’s the trademark. Come on, admit it, you did get wary of packages in the mail and phone calls after that, didn’t you?

2) Shutter

The Thais too, know how to make a good horror movie.

What sets this apart from other horror movies is that it has a solid plot, stellar acting and best of all, (yes my favourite criterion) a twist at the end. Another smart movie that again, does not resort to cheap scare tactics.

And the ultimate horror movie is…

.

.

.

exorcistnewmp1) The Exorcist

The Exorcist is to all horror movies, what the durian is to all fruits.

Projectile vomit, 180-degrees head-turn and the spider-walk. Man, I’m getting goosebumps just talking about it.

This movie is SERIOUSLY recommended for the most seasoned of all horror movie goers. Beginners, don’t even think about it.

Apparently, it terrified movie goers so much when it was screened that some had to check themselves into mental hospitals. There are even rumours that some of the things that happened in the film weren’t scripted…you’ve been warned. Hooked

Everyone said that 'The Exorcist' is the scariest movie, but I don't find it that scary. I find 'The Eye' scarier. Maybe it's because I can relate the events in 'The Eye' to my daily life.
