Written by Muhammad Al-Yazid B Abdul Latiff

Most would view the notion of CSI-like investigation on ghosts as utterly ridiculous, absolutely absurd, and not to mention completely pointless.

However, voodoo, black magic and all kinds of unexplainable phenomena are still occurring all over the world, even in this day and time. So, who ya gonna call?

The Singapore Paranormal Investigators, or SPI as they are commonly known, deal with "the serious study of the paranormal". Driven by their own experiences, these believers of the supernatural investigate ghosts and hauntings, with the assistance of already available studies on this field.

The team of paranormal investigators includes people with claimed "sixth sense" and many who are well versed with the subject matter.

Equipped with proper ghost-sensing devices and a moralistic code of conduct, SPI's courageous agents undergo seemingly no-return-ticket missions at well-known mysterious and traumatic places like Old Ford Motor Factory (where the British surrendered to the Japanese) and Kopi Hill Cemetery.

Mystical exploration is also a source of their study, like examining horrifying exorcism of people, etc.

Founded by NTU ex-professor Kenny, who has expertise in scientific research, and Charles Goh, who is erudite in extensive paranormal cases, the scientific approach which the organisation undertakes is inevitable.

SPI has also created a portal for the common people interested in this knowledge, vowing to assist those in need through helping them make sense of their strangest experiences, sharing theories and research material, while trying to resolve weird dealings with the unknown realm or simply proving beliefs wrong.

In an interview with Kenny, he said in relation to the code of conduct during 'Hungry Ghost Festival', "I acknowledge that we are living in Singapore, that is a place of mixed cultures and religions in harmony. We do have to respect their cultural beliefs. So regardless of belief or disbelief in the Hungry Ghost practices, the best precaution is to keep a respectful mind towards everything, both humans and ghosts."

When asked about cynicism in this field, he cited, "Well, we are sceptics too, so [we're] thinking in the same frequency. For SPI, we are never gullible believers. In fact, we are training people away from superstitions."

Their archives of investigation reports, research, and somewhat eerie photos online are continuously expanding, clearly benefiting societal needs in this matter of confusion.

The archives also include a collection of intimidating ghost stories, as well as reviews of haunted places like the old Changi hospital.

So have SPI assisted in helping victims of possession? Apparently, they have: "We have been through at least three such cases. In the three cases, one thing in common is a strong belief or self-suggestion, that some 'dirty' thing was attached on the subject's body."

However, experience shows that these cases aren't as supernatural as they seem to be.

While describing an old man's phantom possession, Kenny reveals that "the so called possession or deadly hex we found was more of a psychological effect that needed a lot of care and love to untangle their problems."
