The Music Aficionado
6. Two words: MOSH PIT. Everyone needs to experience a mosh pit at least once in their lifetime (and that goes without saying, before you grow old).
Bodies smashing against each other, sweat rolling down each other's faces, screaming out lyrics with your fellow fans. It's a holy communion of the music scene.
For the faint-hearted, there are calmer 'mosh pits' where fans just stand with each other and sway or wave to the beat of their songs. Of course, these would probably be more evident in slower music genres.
Don't worry about getting grievous injuries though! Singaporeans are generally known to be a helpful bunch of moshers, who will help to pull you up from the ground if you happen to fall, even if they are the ones who made you fall in the first place!
7. Cut your own amateur CD! Take a step back from listening to your favourite artistes, and start making some music of your own!
With technology readily available and broadcasting techniques like Podcasting at our fingertips, dabbling in some good ol' jamming sessions will definitely help you live out your dream as a rock star.
Start out small with a group of friends, or if you're feeling game, go solo! Your bedroom can be your studio once you've equipped yourself with a computer, a microphone and a mixing program such as Garageband.
You can write your own original material or return to the past with cover songs because creating your own album has virtually no rules!
In a way, you'll be giving back to the music community - and having tonnes of fun while doing so. Think of it as a level above your K-Box sessions.
8. Attend a Classical Orchestra's performance. Now before you turn your backs on me and start saying how ridiculously boring classical music is, just hear me out: modern music might have more similarities with classical music than you think!
Brahms, Chopin, Liszt may all sound foreign to you but you'd have at least heard of Beethoven and Mozart. Classical music has had a much more powerful influence on contemporary music that you might not be aware of. Did you know that Beethoven's Fifth Symphony's popular motif was present in 2005's hit V for Vendetta?
Take a cue from pop culture and indulge in a classical concert, and find out for yourself if classical music is really that boring.
The Geek
9. To build a machine with both form and function is every geek's dream. Building your dream PC before your eyesight starts to fail you, and your hands are too weak to hold a screwdriver, is probably one of the must-dos for any true blue computer geek.
Without getting to the technical details, ever dreamed of owning a machine that can play the latest games without any lag-time, and have your choice of the best graphics card, or the fastest processor available? Ready-made products hardly satisfy this plea.
So what's a geek to do? Do-it-yourself, of course! Geeks in Singapore are spoilt for choice with major hubs such as Funan Center and the favourite haunt, Sim Lim Square. Get friendly with the uncles and aunties in Sim Lim as you trawl the stores in search for your much needed spare parts.
Building your own custom-made, pimped out PC takes thousands of dollars and a lot of effort, so it's obvious to do it when you're young and motivated.
Once your new wicked machine is up and running, you can type your report, "grind" (level up) your characters in the MMORPG (Massive Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game) of your choice, and read HOOKED simultaneously!
10. The Mecca of Geeks range from Akihabara and Kyoto in the East to Skywalker Ranch and the Google offices in the West. Geeks from all over the world should make their youthful pilgrimages to these hallowed places.
Gaming geeks should visit the Nintendo Headquarters in Kyoto, which is tucked away in a quiet industrial area. While it's not open to public, merely standing outside the surrounding walls of the massive building will undoubtedly bring a tear to your eye. Even if you're not "hardcore", visiting the place where Super Mario and Pokemon were spawned, is a magical experience.
If you love computer science and couldn't bear to part with your HTML or Java skills for a day, maybe visiting Silicon Valley would reboot (pun intended) your senses. Of course, this is where all your computer components and latest codes are being churned out every day.
The Google Headquarters, Googleplex, wins hands down as the ultimate Geeky Place and one of the best working environments ever. It's no surprise that Google employees are happy with their sand volleyball court, two swimming pools, and free laundry rooms!
There you have it! HOOKED's Top 10 Guide to Things To Do Before You Grow Old! Now sit back, relax, and enjoy your youth while you still can! Hooked
