Page 1 of 3 If you think face-lifting, botox and liposuction are answers to your pursuit of eternal youth, let HOOKED present you with an alternative and painless way of dispelling the notion of ageism that goes beyond superficiality and into the personality.
Bringing you an interview with three evergreen personalities from NUS itself, you will realise that the elixir of youth is really pure psychological.
At the youthful age of 39, Loke Hung Yean has already established himself as an accomplished academic. An Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, he has lucked out in the home ground as well, being blissfully married with a son.
Although no one doubts his youthfulness, he tries to reaffirm the fact by reminding us of his existing NS obligations. His sporting attitude, which has endeared himself to his students, was evident as he gamely agreed to this interview, moments after being sprung upon with an interview request after one of his lectures.
1) What do you do during your free time?
I mainly exercise. Oh yes, and spend time with my son.
2) How do you juggle your career and leisure activities?
Well, work comes first for me usually.
3) Where's your favourite hangout?
NUH canteen. I mainly go there for the coffee.
4) What is the most adventurous thing that you have done?
I would say my trip to the Great Wall of China last year. It was very fun and the scenery was simply beautiful. The Forbidden City was beautiful too. Have you been there? [Reporter shakes her head] You haven't? You should definitely go there one day.
5) Do you have problems interacting with younger people?
Well, sometimes. It used to be harder but now that I have an 8-year old, he does expose me to a lot of what people now might consider as the 'in' things. Haha. You know, like...uh, Pokemon? I help him out with his Pokemon game sometimes, when he runs into difficulty clearing a stage of the game. [Grin]
6) Lastly, what is your motto in life?
Hmm, it's very simple, I guess. Just enjoy what you are doing. I'm fortunate enough to be teaching and researching Mathematics, which is something I love. I enjoy teaching very much too, so I really appreciate the life I'm leading right now.
