However, the most exciting part of Noise
Singapore 2007 would be the Noise Apprenticeship.
It is an eight-week program that pairs budding young artist with an
experienced mentor who will serve as a source of inspiration and adviser
to the youths. This allows the apprentices to learn from the best in
the creative industry about the practicalities of being in it.
The apprenticeship program would see youths having the chance to experience
the adrenalin rush of working on real-life projects, which is a rare opportunity.
One of the participants involved in the
Noise Apprenticeship is Bum Ariffin, a film student from LASALLE-SIA
College of the Arts.
Bum has been participating in Noise Singapore since
it started its run back in 2005 and has never looked back since. For
his first Noise Apprenticeship last year, he was mentored by Kelley
Cheng, the Editorial Director of PageOne Publishing and the Editor for
IsH magazine where he got to experience how it was like doing photography
in the real world.
Moreover, his apprenticeship had given him the chance
to gain an access to a wider base of contacts to tap on for shoots in
the creative industry.
Bum believes that people are too caught
up in with daily life that they tend to overlook the aesthetic, which
is why he stands out because he represents the minor group of people
who focuses on the arts in Singapore.
Although his photographic talent
has brought him far in the competition last year, his life was not all
smooth sailing. Bum's teenage years were fraught with truancy and
delinquency, which eventually landed him in court.
However, his life turned
around when he saw the tears in his parents' eyes and vowed to leave
his bad ways behind. That is when he decided to pursue his interest
in the arts and groom his passion for photography. He also credits his
lecturer Mr. Kelvin Tan for showing him the folly of his rebellious
ways and for bringing his passion for photography to another level.
Bum's 180-degree turn away from his days of being a 'bad boy'
by putting his hope in the arts, is an inspiration to many youths as
he is a living testimony that people can change for the better by channeling
their energies to the right place.
Another apprentice worth looking out
for is FreakyZ, a music apprentice.
FreakyZ participated last
year in the open category, penning a song called "Same Woman Again",
citing inspiration from his past experiences.
He injects humor into
his songs by exaggerating it, making it upbeat and appealing to the
youths. He believes that everyone is placed here with a talent, his
being an innate musical ability, which he desires to bring to the streets
despite battling brain tumor.
He is an inspiration for the youths as
he had never allowed his illness to limit his creative abilities, nor
did he let it stifle his passion for the arts.
FreakyZ's mentor for this year's
Noise Apprenticeship is Imran Ajmain, whom he is looking forward to work
with once again. He believes that through this experience, he will be
able to better reach out and appeal to the local audiences.
Noise Singapore 2007 is the perfect opportunity
for restless youths to channel their creative energies and create a tangible
art piece that would allow them to gain a greater media exposure.
Finally,
an event that combines the best of both worlds - the underexposed
arts culture and the youths! hooked
With no intention to boast, two of our hooked writers, Dan Azmie and Al-Yazid from the band "Quasimodo" are also apprentices of Noise Singapore 2007! They are mentored by Mr Joe Ng, who used to be in The Padres.
See, writing may not be our only forte! Now I'm boasting.
