The World Is Going Under: What Would You Do? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Unmukt Goel & Charmaine Tan
What happens when our rampant misuse of the earth's resources gives rise to incessant flooding and tsunamis that could wipe out vast areas of land?

We are no match for the forces of nature (if we even experience it in Singapore in the first place). However, if the day of apocalypse does come, what would be the things or people you would save?

hooked polls a range of responses from NUS students to see what matters the most to the male and female undergraduates.

globalwarming

With global warming, deforestation, melting of ice caps and other such environmental tragedies that have been initiated by mankind, there is every chance that the world will be ravaged by natural disasters.

If you had one last day here on earth, how would you want to spend it? What are the things closest to your heart, or perhaps the seemingly most logical things that you would want to take with you to a deserted planet far, far away?

Hooked spoke to students around campus to find out what their reaction was. After assuring them that this was only a hypothetical situation and that they were in fact completely safe (at least for now), we had managed to tease some interesting views out of them.

He(s) Say:

Yong Le, 21, an exchange student from the Chinese University of Hong Kong

Unsure of whether that distant planet far, far away would have any resources at all, this practical 21 year old wants to ensure that he survives for a while by bringing lots of portable water with him.

Yong Le would also take his laptop, as he believes he can do everything using it. His love for chocolates would make him take as many cartons of it as possible. As for the people he would save, Yong Le has put his parents as his first priority.

Bharath Narayanan, 17, a first year Engineering student from Dubai

He would take his mobile phone and his laptop, as he believes that these are the two most useful tools for communication. He'd like to take some amount of food with him as well, and save all the people he knows. He'd also take the things that are close to his heart, including a picture of God.

Dennis Osterpedersen, 20, an exchange student from Denmark

Dennis would spend his last day playing sports and trying out the things he has always wanted to do, such as bungee jumping! He'd save his family, but there is no stuff in particular that he wouldn't be able to live without.

Zhang Zhong Kun, a first year Engineering student from China

Zhong Kun wants to take the essentials. Matches, a knife, a hook are all he needs. He'd add a few magazines, some pen and paper to write down his thoughts and a camera if there is enough space.

Vinesh Lalta, 23, an exchange student from the Netherlands

He would save his family. This Business student doesn't want to take any stuff with him, though he would like to keep the chain that a very special aunt gave him.

Saving family, friends, some food and electronic gadgets, I thought these people pretty much have it all covered. Personally, I'd also bring along an inflatable boat, just in case the planet I'm going to is also flooded.

All my music would be securely placed in my bag. I'd throw in a monopoly board; it's really good when one is bored. I've been dying to have one of those long coats that people wear when it's snowing. I'd probably put all my money into buying one of those for myself.

I know a day would not be enough, but maybe if I had an advance warning, I'd want to go to every country in the world and experience all the different cultures and cuisines.

Yeah, like I'm going to be this calm and optimistic when that happens.
