She(s) Say:

Imagine being placed in a scene from Armageddon and realising that it is not fictional movie, but a horrifying reality!

Before those peptic ulcers start to gnaw on your precious stomach and you begin running around screaming wildly with your hands waving madly in the air, take a deep breath and think on your toes: what would you do, who and what would you save if you could?

And no, this is not about picking between your girlfriend and your mother, like how some men are subjected to being asked.

Since time immemorial, we have been differentiated from the boys based on what we are good at and what we are not. We are told that girls are better in languages and the arts and guys are better in geometry and the sciences.

Novels have female characters placing more importance on the emotional well being of themselves and others, while male characters emphasize on the intellectual sphere. The brains are wired differently between genders thus, what is important to one may not be placed in the same priority as the other.

After talking to some female undergraduates, their responses on the above mentioned question seem to correspond with us women being more emotionally attached to close ones.

Belinda Ng, 20, a second year Arts and Social Sciences student

"I would save my loved ones because I don't want to be a rat, scampering around just to be able to save my own life and realise that there is no one around me."

Tiffany Loh, 19, a first year Arts and Social Sciences student

"My girlfriends, definitely. What is the point in living if I have to do it alone? If I could save someone or something, I would make sure at least my closer friends are saved."

When we are placed in such a situation that leaves us with little choice, most of the undergraduates would scramble around and try to do something to save groups of people like one's family members and friends.

However, between family members and friends, many choose their friends instead. Perhaps this is not a worrying trend since we are nearing the prime in our lives and our times with friends are more important to us now that we are young adults.

We females move in a social community, causing us to not relish living in solitude without the presence of our groups of close friends and family members. When probed further about the reason for this choice, they usually say that there is no point living on this earth if they had to be alone and would rather perish together with the vast majorities of people.

Comparing responses from females to that of the males, our findings show that the males would include material things together with their close ones to save if it was in their power. Just wondering, guys, what use is the handphone or laptop when phone lines and internet connectivity are damaged?

Citing that their entire life's work is contained in that single gadget, males definitely place more importance on their work and intellectual sphere in regard to their emotional attachment to others. It cannot be said that this fact makes them heartless; in retrospect, it shows them to be more practical because in the case whereby power lines are not disrupted, their gadgets could always be utilized for help.

As for myself (and as part of the female species), I never believe in solitude and the phrase "everyone for himself (or herself for that matter)". The world could self-destruct and I would much rather perish than be the sole survivor amongst my friends and family members.

I guess we really are wired differently; we girls take pride in the fact that we are more closely attached to our girlfriends and can go on talking to each other for hours - something that the guys would never be able to comprehend.

However, I do not believe in male bashing because even if they are not so attached to their loved ones emotionally, they are still social beings and most interviewed would save at least someone, be it their girlfriend or family.

There you have it, no sex is heartless in wanting to save only him-/herself or some other inanimate object because loneliness is not something that we seek.

So reach out and give your friends and loved ones a hug, before the world is really going under. Going by statistics, it may not be too long from now. hooked
