Page 1 of 2 Now that we’ve all gotten ourselves into the most established
institution on sunny island Singapore (yes, the one that’s in the Top
20 QS World University Rankings), let’s show the others that we not
only outwit and outlast our competitors academically, we make even
stronger contenders in the field of out-dressing with our party clothes
(unfortunately, the same can’t be said for our school get-up).
The question is - how?
Well, bearing
in mind the function of clothes as concealment, attraction and
individual expression, we take inspirations from Oscar suits and
dresses, add a dash of MTV style to them, and come up with a
delightfully simple dressing mantra – sleek and shine.
First up, girls should all get dress-y, and I mean literally.
Who wants to look like a car crash victim with torn jeans at the kneecap or high school rebel with cut holes littering that flimsy top, screaming with angst-ridden slogans? Legions of girls will swear that dresses make it far easier for mobility - from showing off your dance moves to threading through the grooving crowd for a thirst-quencher at the bar.
Next, take a good look at yourself in stark nudity, mentally note your flaws and assets before attempting to hide those less than perfect parts or flaunt your god-given gifts.
If you have a tummy, do justice to yourself by avoiding dresses that cling onto it, because chances are, when you strut, it makes you look more frumpy than funky. If you have to-die-for legs, your hemlines ought to be as high up as possible, because really, if you’ve got it, you should flaunt it. Best before everything gets saggy.
Despite all that hype about venturing out of ‘The Little Black Dress’ safety net, black is still the colour that gives the illusion of a slender silhouette. Its versatility lies in the fact that it can be worn at any party and makes your dresses look pricier than they actually are. But of course, we can’t always stick to good ol’ black.
TIME style and design 2007 explicitly states that designers are turning to the brightest hues of colours. Still, colour remains largely a personal preference. So all I can say is go figure your colours and keep a handy collection of them before the next best bash comes around.
After we’ve picked that perfect little dress, it’s time we learn to accessorize with flair. Whether you are updating the look with a pair of dazzling, intricately crafted earrings or adorning your neck with a diamond necklace, be sure not to overdo it in a flurry of pre-party excitement.
As avid collectors of accessories, we’re always tempted to throw in everything we have for that major bash. But take a second to visualise Christmas trees with a million different coloured light bulbs blinking in one continuous beat. That’s right, we don’t need to be tagged with that picture of us looking like Santa’s Christmas decoration from hell on Facebook. So, bling it on, but only one or two will do the trick.
Whether it's candy-inspired hues or metallic reflects, the volume and definition you apply on your face has got to pay tribute to your features. Conceal the blemishes and bring out those deep, dark, pensive eyes.
Top it off with a sexy hairdo - tousled or styled. Flowing shiny tresses tumbling about your bare shoulders make you look sexy effortlessly, and braiding is a classic hairdo that brings out the uptown girl in you.
