Page 1 of 2 The gender binary that exists in society necessarily confines male and female to their respective roles and links masculinity to toughness and femininity to fragility.
Hooked challenges this stereotype by pitting our writers against each other in the battle for the tougher sex!
She says
I can practically hear the male readers out there breaking out into testosteronal euphoria as they proudly claim the rightful ownership of the title of the tougher sex. But hold on, fellas.
Before you click the ubiquitous red X button on the top right hand corner (or perhaps the 'Back' button for those of you trying to be smart), let me represent the ladies in saying that hey, perhaps we deserve a shot at being the tougher sex as well.
He says
Well, since it is widely accepted that males are the stronger sex, I see no harm in examining the 'case' that women have. Being magnanimous is part of being male.
She says
Yes, yes, I admit it. We may not always be able to carry that big, bulky box or change a flat tyre as skilfully as you can. And maybe some of us do tear more than we'd like to admit. But we do have our redeeming points - we are just as tough as you guys, just not in the conventional areas.
He says
Ah well, I'm just glad that conventions are conventions for a reason.
She says
Have you tried walking around in stilettos? That pretty little pair of heels on our feet that make us a few inches taller do look good but they come with a heavy price. It is a killer to put on those heels (and walk around in them!) for the whole day. Ever seen the blisters post-heels? They're not pretty at all.
He says
Have you tried walking in the male bathrooms in NUS? It's a minefield of human waste. You need to tip-toe around like a ballet dancer (a male ballet dancer) on crack, and when you finally reach the urinal you need to subject yourself to the trauma of peeing right next to another guy. That's right. No barriers between urinals. 'Live and let's see' - that's the motto.
She says
What about stomach cramps? Yes, it is as bad as it sounds and looks. Think being kicked in the balls multiplied by two. *Ouch* And there's no consolation in the fact that it comes once a month.
He says
Well, since there is no way for me to find out the level of pain, allow me to assume the boisterousness and flippancy of my sex. You wouldn't believe how bad the pain is when you're kicked in the balls. It's like stomach cramps multiplied by a thousand, and there's no consolation that it may happen anytime in your life.
