Perhaps
if there should be one difference between Wang Chuan Yi (also known
as Kingone) and the average Taiwanese idol pop singer, it ought to be
the maturity of his voice and image.
With his suave, clean-cut good
looks and steady, grown-up voice, this 27-year-old actor-turned-singer
exudes a quiet coolness and thoughtful virility in his latest EP -
Love, Kingone.
The
latest idol drama he starred in, entitled Why Why Love was released
early this year, with a plot centred around a love triangle, where he
and his brother (played by Mike He) fall for the same girl (Rainie Yang)
and attempt various ways and means to win her heart.
The drama met with
great success, leaving its audience wonder who the singer
of the drama's theme song was. This led to his record company's decision to release Wang's single earlier than originally
planned.
Comprising of three songs, all of which are soundtracks in the
drama, it makes for pleasant and easy listening - nice uncluttering after
a cluttered day.
This
might surprise fans but Wang actually received training for his budding
singing career right here in sunny island Singapore! In May 2007, under
the guidance of the trainers at Ocean Butterflies Holdings Pte Ltd,
he learned not only to sing, but also to play the guitar and use the
instrument to compose his own music.
Upon his return to Taiwan, his
manager was surprised at his noteworthy improvement in his singing ability
and the discovery of his niche in his singing style.
His single also features a music video for the track Wo Yao De Shi Jie,
which is the last part of a triquel, succeeding the story plot in the already
released music videos of his other two tracks, Huan Huan Ai
and Welcome to My Heart respectively.
In the drama, he played the role
of an immaculate yet sensitive businessman, who met a girl by chance. Both tumbled through a tunnel of romance, misunderstanding, nostalgia
and ...fat chance if you thought I'd divulge the ending portrayed
in the third music video here - get the single and see for yourself!
Though
Wang's voice may not possess an impressive pitch range or awe-inspiring
lung power, what he has is a voice that can capture your attention by the feelings he emotes just as well as his acting.
According
to Wang, he acts through body language but sings via respiratory emotions.
His voice remains very much at a constant middle pitch range, with neither
the prowess of high notes nor RnB muffled sounds of low notes (think:
Jay Chou), yet it is memorable anyway, not least because his heartfelt
crooning is soothing to listen to.
Give
this single a shot. Not a must-have, but we don't always want to listen to groundbreaking
music, do we? Sometimes, a little normalcy would suffice. hooked
