For six weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday),
from 15 February through 23 March 2008, look out for a hive of activities
at the National University of Singapore - The NUS Arts Festival (NAF)
is back again!
Now in its third year,
NAF is a flagship arts event that is presented by NUS Centre For the
Arts (CFA). NAF brings together NUS talents and industry professionals
to showcase the rich cultural landscape in NUS to the NUS community,
the West zone and beyond.
Each year, CFA targets to showcase the
arts through innovative partnerships with the various faculties within
NUS and arts practitioners. NAF 2008 is no different. It will see an
Arts + Medicine focus, to present aspects of creative healing. Apart
from the positive impact of the arts on wellbeing and holistic healthcare,
NAF 2008 will give the audience unique insights into medicine with the
artists' touch.
Says Ms Christine Khor, Director of CFA,
"Creativity and wellbeing are intricately linked. We want to partner
NUS faculties and professionals, to showcase arts in novel ways and
encourage imagination and artistic expression via different channels.
The medical focus for NAF 2008 is one example."
NAF 2008 officially kicks
off on 15 February 2008 at University Cultural Centre (UCC) with the
opening show Love Is In the Air. The romantic theme is timely,
as it is during the Valentine season.
Providing the artistic direction for
the NAF Opening Show is Singapore's leading music arranger and NUS
Jazz Band Music Director Iskandar Ismail. The festival's opening show
brings together the NUS Symphony Orchestra Ensemble and the best of
local talents like NUS alumnae jazz vocalist Rani Singam, and veteran
jazz and music artiste Jacintha Abisheganaden, NUS Political Science
alumnus Singapore Idol runner-up Jonathan Leong, and Cultural Medallion
recipient, jazz maestro Jeremy Monteiro. Also joining us this year in
support of the arts and medicine collaboration are musically and medically
talented doctors such as Drs Roy Ang and Lucy Ooi.
"CFA students enjoy professional tutoring
by 80 of Singapore's best artistes including music maestro Iskandar
Ismail. We are very privileged to have him chart the artistic direction
for the NAF Opening Show and look forward to another opportunity to
expose our students to performing alongside well-known and experienced
musicians and professionals," reveals Ms Khor.
With over 100 programmes in music, dance,
drama, film, literary, visual arts and a lifestyle bazaar, the audience
can look forward to a range of educational and stimulating programmes
- all for free or for a small fee. There are also programmes
for families with kids. There is something for everyone, so get your
dose of tonic-rich Arts & Entertainment at the NUS Arts Festival
2008!
