Feelin' Good About School, Much? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Julia Lua
You know how some people say that Singaporeans have nothing more than complaints for everything under the sun? Sadly, that seems to be true. Price hikes for cabs? That's an outrage! Write in to the papers! Rising school fees? That’s preposterous! Let’s have a forum discussion!

Well, here at HOOKED, we say enough of the nay-saying and the complaints. We snooped around to find out what makes some of you feel good about NUS. We’ve got to start looking at the glass half-full, and start appreciating what we’ve got! Don’t get us wrong. We’re not trying to be preachy here. Tis’ the season of giving and HOOKED's giving everyone in NUS some hope you can definitely use.

Complaint #1: “I just need a degree. Who cares where it's from?”

You can be proud to tell everyone which university you graduated from.

It’s not just a degree. You can be assured of a globally recognised degree at the end of three to four years. We don’t have to fret about the lack of acclaim from a university that is top 20 in the world. After all, NUS has been around for ages.

Complaint #2: “NUS is just a concrete structure with stairs, stairs and more stairs. Heard of National University of Stairs (NUS)?”

Although it is not located in an almost forested area like NTU, it is by no means a concrete jungle. NUS students are privileged to have interactions with nature amidst all the studying frenzy. In fact, many buildings are erected around the periphery of Kent Ridge Park, allowing fresh air to infuse into our thinking brains, while mugging along brown wooden benches or just ambling along walkways from lecture to lecture.

Climbing the stairs cultivates a healthier being, acting as a form of exercise for the students without compromising their hectic studious lifestyle. Besides, a bit of stairs won't kill.

Complaint #3: “Travelling to NUS is a killer for all of us who aren’t living in the West. Don’t get me started on rushing for cross-faculty lectures!”

Bus drivers who drive like they're on the set of Speed ensure that you get from Arts to Science in no time.

Actually, the locality of NUS is highly accessible. It’s a short bus ride to Buona Vista and Clementi MRT station. Within the campus, shuttle buses take us from point A to point B. It’s so convenient that you see very little people walking along sidewalks to get to their tutorial venues, since most of them are squashed up like packed sardines on those timely shuttle buses.

From most of the bus drivers' enthusiasm as they turn around the corner, you can rest assured that you’ll be traveling from science to engineering faculty in moments. Just remember to hold on tight.

With NUH within the campus, we can also get immediate medical attention if any mishap should happen. It’s only a shuttle bus away.

Complaint #4: “There are so many rules and information about graduation! If only I had stayed awake throughout the entire faculty talk in Year 1.”

Not to fret. What some of us like about NUS are the prompt, almost instantaneous replies from faculty officers. Whether it is an enquiry on graduation requirements, admission criteria or CCA points, they offer replies or solutions with a snap of the finger. At least most of the time, they do.

Complaint #5: “The toilets are always closed for washing/wet!”

But that means we actually get pretty clean toilets with gigantic rolls of toilet papers and seats without pee splattered on them. Because they are washed frequently, they are pretty much spotless or squeaky clean. Furthermore, there is a generous amount of soap provided.

That said, we heard that the Engineering toilets may need a little bit more improvement regarding the number of sinks in the male toilets.
