Food

He Says: Some things make all people feel good, man or woman. Food is a universal joy. For men, when we get hungry, we get angry. We can’t think straight. We shout and pound tables, and kick chairs. Fill us up though, and all the world is rosy and good.

Most men, however, are not satisfied with chocolates and ice-cream or all the sweet things that girls seem to crave. These cannot (and henceforth, shall not) be considered food. Men want REAL food - things that fill the belly and fuel the machine. I’m talking steak and potatoes, lasagne blanketed with cheese, rice, meat and vegetables. Only after these things have been properly put away into our bellies can the desert be brought out.

She Says: Yeah, and who will be the one cooking all this food? Chocolate is convenient and practical at two in the morning, while giving a steak knife to someone having PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) can be very dangerous indeed.

However, a cure for all female emotional woes would be comfort food. Unfortunately, healthy stuff like muesli bars and salad do not fall into this category. Even for those health nuts out there, health regimes need to be interrupted once in a while. We all have our vices – a bag of Ruffles (the family pack), a pint of Ben and Jerry’s, a basket of Xiao Long Bao - whatever makes the situation seem better.

Nonetheless, I think that the ultimate comfort food that all of us can identify with is obvious – chocolate. Whether it comes in small bite-sized pieces (think M&Ms, Hershey’s kisses and the like) or guilt-inducing bars, satisfaction is guaranteed.

So why does chocolate make us happy? Chocolate triggers the release of endorphins and phenylethylamine – the chemicals that account for happiness and the feeling of being in love. This is a perfectly rational reason for wolfing down that Cadbury bar. What prevents us from popping M&Ms like vitamins (i.e. “I must get my daily dose of phenylethylamine!”) would be  the guilt that comes along with them. And yes, we know that chocolate does not make the exams easier or any problems disappear, but it is called COMFORT food for a reason.

        He Says
: I repeat, men need REAL food. It's okay to indulge in junk food and comfort food once in a while. We all do. But then go around complaining about the weight you put on and questioning us about it? Trust me, men don’t feel good about this, and there is no way our answer can make you feel better either.

Shopping

        She Says
: Girls just wanna have fun – so the song goes. I’ve got to admit that sometimes, we engage in fluffy pursuits to feel good. But give us a break. Hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt.

Another favourite hobby for most of us women – shopping. Okay, it sucks walking around Orchard for hours to end up buying nothing. Furthermore, for the poor university student, the wallet is a serious limiting factor.

However, I suppose the feel-good part of shopping is when you find a nice blouse in Topshop, turn the price-tag over and realise it costs only 10 bucks! A bit of wishful thinking there, but you get the drift. Finding a steal makes me happy - suddenly those hours of aimless walking do not seem that bad after all. Maybe it’s the challenge (if I may use the word) of searching for something that we like and can afford. Some girls like window-shopping – the whole shopping mall can be your dress-up trunk. If you can’t afford that dress from Zara, no one is stopping you from giving it a try in the changing room anyway.

He Says: It looks like guys have this one figured. Chocolate, shopping and gossip are part of a girl’s feel-good arsenal, no surprises there.

A Happy Slob

She Says: Despite us being social creatures, sometimes just lazing around alone at home is the best way to feel good. The semester break is after all, a break and running around town shopping may just leave you more exhausted than satisfied.

Wearing those glasses you won’t be caught dead in outside the house (or even your room), the baggiest shirt, that comfy pair of shorts and watching rented movies can be therapeutic for us too. Rejuvenation doesn’t have to consist of spas and manicures, we girls can be low-maintenance too - when we feel like it.

He Says: Ah, it’s nice to know that girls like being a slob too! However, guys have slobbishness down to an art, so we’re the masters of slacking around. Much to learn, you still have, young padawans. Oh yes, and don’t be too quick to dismiss the spectacles - I think glasses look sexy on girls.

Despite the differences in the things that make men and women feel good, they are, at their core, the same. Men or women, we want to be stimulated, satisfied, wanted and connected to others. That’s some feel-good stuff for all of us. hookeD
