10 Things That Make People See Red PDF Print E-mail
Written by Akshay Kothari
There are so many different things that make us angry, and major events that really cause rage, such as your spouse cheating on you (big one!), or having your house burnt down (bigger one!). This article isn’t about the huge things, because that would make it a litany of human misery.

We here at Hooked don’t want to make you miserable, I mean, life’s bad enough as it is.

Anger goes by many names. It has been called wrath, rage and fury, among many others. It has been attributed to a variety of causes over the course of human history.

The ancient Romans thought that anger was the result of imbalance in the ‘humors’ of the body. These were the fluids thought to govern emotion. Buddhist philosophy sees anger as a destructive emotion that lies at the root of samsara, or suffering.

In this article, I want to talk about the small things that really tick you off, the little ant-bites of life that blow your gaskets. Here are ten of those:

Number 10: Hard-To-Open Packages

We’ve all bought that box or can of something that was sealed so tight in plastic wrapping and cellophane tape that you’d think the manufacturer wanted to seal it for all eternity. We huff and we puff, and try to use our nails, and then knife, before ramming it with our heads, and go for the dynamite…that makes us so angry because we simply can’t get the cursed thing open!

Number 9: Annoying Songs

Some songs, I swear, come straight from hell.

They’re just so annoying, and it doesn't help that they are being played over and over again on the airwaves, until they bore into your head and nest there, feeding on your brain matter as they slowly kill you.

For me, ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna is the annoying song. The first time I heard it, I thought my radio was spoiled because it kept going “ella, ella, ella”. Every subsequent time I heard the song, I wished my radio was spoiled.

Number 8: Computer Glitches

You’re sitting at your desk during an hour of the morning, which God intended us to sleep, because you are trying to finish what could be the most boring paper ever written. And then, the computer hangs. The mouse stops responding and nothing works.

In case you’re wondering, screaming vulgarities at your computer will make it work better. Try it.

Number 7: Traffic

Every motorist can relate to this one. Being stuck in traffic on a hot afternoon with car horns honking can really raise your blood pressure. Even worse, is when someone abruptly cuts you off while you’re driving.

There’s a reason that the phrase ‘road rage’ exists. You wouldn’t believe the number of times I’ve wished my car could fire missiles…

Number 6: The Long Wait

Call me impatient, and I’ll call it being human. Everyone hates to be made to wait. Whether it's waiting in traffic, or waiting ages for a bus that was supposed to have arrived, it really makes me fume, especially when it makes me late.

Number 5: Minor Injuries

It’s the small wounds that make you mad. The big injuries, like breaking a leg or spine, hurt too much for anger, and will probably make you unconscious first.

I’m talking about stubbing your toe, or biting your tongue. The sudden rush of pain really makes you want to vent your anger on an unkind world, usually by punching the wall. Of course, this only makes things worse.

Number 4: Being Laughed At

There are only two kinds of people who don’t mind being laughed at: comedians and babies. The rest of us erupt when people make fun of us. There’s nothing worse than everyone being in on a joke, except you.

Number 3: Being Hungry

Have you ever seen starving lions on the Discovery channel? Have you seen the look in their eyes? That’s the look many of us get when we’re hungry.

Hunger is a gnawing pain in the belly that never stops, until food comes to the rescue. This pain makes us ready to bite someone’s head off, even if it may not taste so good.

Number 2: Trying Hard and Yet Failing

Some things are just not meant to be. We may eventually accept that, but before acceptance comes rage. It may be trying to solve a math problem, or trying to write a good essay for a class. You try your best and still fall flat. That would make anyone hopping mad.

When it happens to me, I just want to roll up that paper and shove it…somewhere unpleasant.

Number 1: the Omniscient

There are some people who are convinced that they’ve got it all figured out; that they have all the answers and that they’re always right. These are the self-proclaimed ‘omniscient ones’.

Some of these people are the so-called guardians of morality that condemn alternative lifestyles for being ‘immoral’, or authority figures that tell us what we should do with our lives and seek to set our priorities for us, because “they know what’s good for us.”

We’ve all had those. And we all hope that they will one day, go away. There are so many little grievances, little thorns like these that make us angry. If you ask some people, they’ll tell you to calm down and keep cool.

In my opinion, however, I think you should explode. Be angry. Be human. HOOKED
