With the recent obsession with all things mini, from iPod Nanos to walking Size Zeroes, HOOKED has decided to give our two chomps worth and see whether it is possible to find mini bites in our food-loving nation, where Big is Value.
To our surprise, a walk through the nearest mega mall, Vivocity, showed that there is hope for those blessed (or cursed) with small appetites.
Presenting, our Guide to last you through a hard day’s shopping at Vivocity.
Breakfast
Breakfast can make or break your day - and Vivocity has a few options that will hopefully brace you enough for a long day at work.
The Basement level conveniently houses Breadtalk and Toast Box (#B2-34), where you can get a cup of steaming Kopi-O at $1.20 and “Little Delights” - 5 mini danishes at the price of $3. For those who want something more Asian, Little Red Shop (#B2-K10) sells mini pineapple tarts at 80 cents each. These are easy on the stomach, light on the wallet, and just perfect for a quick pick-me-up to start the day.
Lunch
Hordes of office workers typically descend on Vivocity during lunch, so in order to get first dibs on Sushi Tei’s (#02-152) Mini California Maki (6 for $5), be sure to be there early.
After stuffing yourself with many rolls of maki, top if all off with a cup of espresso from Starbucks Coffee (#02-60) for a quick pick-me-up. It costs $3.30 for a small cup, and as the warm dark coffee fills the corners of your stomach, life will, for a moment, seem utterly blissful.
Tea
This is not a common phenomenon in Singapore, but there is no harm indulging in some snacks just before dinner. Candy Empire (#B2-32/33) would be just the right place to visit. There, they sell a vast assortment of chocolates, and 100grams of mini Snickers or other sweets can be yours for $3.80. Alternatively, walk up to Dippin’ Donut (#02-125) and buy a box of 10 doughnuts for $12.
If the doughnuts don't quite hit the right spot - head over to Candy Empire at the basement to get a bag full of mixed bite-sized candy! From coconut filled Bounty Chocolate to tiny fingers of chocolate caramel biscuits, you can indulge your sweet tooth with these fun sized pieces and minimal calories (take note, moderation is the key here)!
To feel less guilty about indulging in such unhealthy food, wash it all down with a refreshing cup of Pine Lemon Juice or any other juices from Tracy Juice Culture (#B2-K8) for $3.50.
Dinner
Dinner is the meal to live it up, because it marks the end of the day. Treat yourself for enduring a hard day’s work with a visit to Earle Swensen’s (#02-117) to bite into their lovely and crisp Golden Shrimps.
At $7.90, it is a steal, and a pleasant way of setting the mood for a romantic meal by the waterfront. Shin Kushiya (#02-120/122) is another restaurant worth checking out. Serving Japanese grilled delicacies, its unique Swordfish with Leek Skewer is priced at only $3.40!
Dessert
Finally, what better way to end off a gastronomic tour around Vivocity then by indulging in some fine desserts? Bakerzin (#01-207) offers a selection of three tapas, sorbets or desserts for $9.80. If you are craving ice-cream, Haagen-Dazs (#02-150) could be a better choice as it serves one single scoop of ice-cream at $4.90.
What is the best way to remember this Mini tour around Vivocity? Simple - by popping by Mini Toons (#02-39) to pick up 4 magnets for $10.
It is a cute, fun way of remembering a special day, and of proving that there is hope for those with small appetites. HOOKED
