The Strange Kinds of Delicacies PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nur Rashidah
If we are what we eat, then I'm guessing that these totally peculiar 'delicacies' would very likely have one labelled an oddball. The recess week has already started and I'm sure that we bored young adults would want something to spice up our lives. (Readings and revisions do not count, obviously.)

Since we all love our food, let's get creative with them, shall we? Let HOOKED boggle your mind with these totally odd food combinations!

Here are some popular, albeit unusual, combinations (that I swear people do consume!) guaranteed to make you go "What?!" but just itching to try out anyway. It sure tempted me! Bon appétit!

obfood1 1) Peanut Butter + Oreo

This is, I bet, one odd food combination that is the most popular. I admit, I'm not really much of a PB+O fan, so do forgive my lack of fervour. But what is it that makes the concoction so yummy?

A PB+O fan has spoken: "I love peanut butter, and I love Oreos, so it makes sense to put two super-loves together! Also, I guess I like it because it overwhelms the taste of the cream, which I'm not too fond of."

Right. In fact, Kraft has even created the Double Delight Oreo.

It's your standard Oreo, but with the white cream replaced by chocolate cream and (you guessed it!) peanut butter. So how does this combination match up to the original PB+O?

"I don't think it's any fun when you package it. It's more fun when you buy it separately and dip it in the peanut butter. The novelty is gone."

        Indeed it is.

2) Whipped Potato + Chilli Sauce

I love my whipped potato. I love my chilli sauce. However, I love my whipped potato without chilli sauce.

To me, the both of them just don't exactly go together. But then again, if you're an avid fan of both the mashed potato and the chilli sauce, then why not kill two birds with one stone and combine both?

The result is a unique taste, the smooth creamy whipped potato blended with the spiciness of the chilli sauce. I kind of liked it at first but after the second scoop, I realised that I still prefer my whipped potato chilli-less.

3) McDonald's Rice Burger

odfoodtalk3         Ok, this is just weird. For the uninitiated, this burger was launched as part of the fast-food chain's attempt to introduce something new to the menu. It was launched, if my (poor) memory serves me correctly, in 2005.

The burger had slices of meat (either chicken or beef) in between two slices of rice cakes. Yes, you read right, rice cakes. They've replaced the usual buns with flattened grilled rice.

A friend wisely pointed out that Mos Burger serves something similar, but ladies and gents, this is MacD we're talking about. It's just...odd.

And based on the online reviews and comments, the former was more popular than MacD's creation.

Needless to say, it didn't take off and was scraped off the menu. The most telling sign that this was one food combination that wasn't meant to be, was when MacD had a buy-one-get-one-free promotion, and that still didn't whip Singaporeans into a frenzy. And we all know we love free stuff, so if that didn't work, nothing will.

4) Watermelon + Chocolate Sauce

obfoodtalk5

Yes, watermelon! This combination arose when my fellow Guides sisters and I got bored and had some leftover food after camp. Most people I've encountered have cringed their face when I mention this combination. But I say why not? We have strawberry and banana dipped in chocolate fondue, so I think it's time we give this fruit a chance.

What I love is the juiciness of the watermelon combined with the sweetness of the chocolate sauce. Like I told everyone else, don't shoot it until you try it.

5) Whipped Cream + Pizza

It struck me as odd when I first heard about it, but as I slowly think it through, it has potential. Who can resist a slice of piping hot, cheesy, sauce-laden pizza? Top it off with the most sinful cream of all (besides chocolate) and you have a dietician's worst nightmare.

But hey, who's counting the calories when you've got something as tempting as this? Definitely worth a shot.
