Written by Alicia Tan and Huang Yifang

HOOKED: Have you ever felt embarrassed when you re-watched your videos and TV appearances?

SL: No. These videos are a milestone for me. I have no regrets, (though) sometimes I feel down as well. I'm a normal human being!

HOOKED: We've noticed that your handphone number is on your blog - do you get any weird calls?

SL: Sometimes. The number is available to pranksters, people who want to apply to be my girlfriend, fans and supporters. I usually don't take private numbers and I can hang up anytime when I get prank calls. I don't feel irritated by these pranksters. Supporters call me as well!

HOOKED: It's great that your fans can call you. So as an entertainer, what do you want people to remember you most for? And what's your proudest moment?

SL: People recognizing me! Last time, they used to call me "the stripper". Now they still call me that or "Steven Lim". At least they recognize me and they actually know my name. Even though I'm a reject from Singapore Idol, I have managed to stay in people's memories. At least I'm not nothing.

HOOKED: With you being recognized more easily now, what kinds of experiences have you had so far?

SL: I have people coming up to me to take photographs and get autographs! And people do come up to me and say, "diu wo men nan ren de lian" (You're an embarrassment to us men). Someone even wanted to spar with me!

HOOKED: Wow! Surely you must have someone or something that inspires you when you meet these sort of varied situations?

SL: Edison Chen (is my inspiration). Let me add some juice to your article. I think that the people involved in the scandal are all harmless. We should stop bullying them - they are all human! It's just that their pictures are being spread to the public. It's the best time for him to be in a movie!

Also, I admire Daniel Chan (Chen Xiao Dong) and his singing.

HOOKED: Um, that's an interesting viewpoint. Did you have a different ambition when you were young?

SL: I wanted to be a policeman to catch all the baddies and uphold justice!

HOOKED: That's interesting! Can you tell us more about your family? (Note: Steven Lim is a cousin to Xinyao pioneer Liang Wern Fook) Were they your inspirational figures?

SL: Liang Wern Fook is my distant cousin. My uncle also composed Guan Huai Fang Shi. I have a younger brother who is three years younger and he has a daughter.

HOOKED: Okay, so do you think talent runs in your family?

SL: Haha, no lah. I have my own talent.

HOOKED: What does your family think about your popularity?

SL: They are very supportive. In Channel 8's Never Say Die (2006), I was one of the finalists. They supported me and voted for me!

HOOKED: Just to end off, what were you like in school? How different are you from your old self?

SL: I liked to spar in school (just don't hit the face!), it's fun! I played catching and we threw rocks at each other. I'm a graduate from Nanyang Polytechnic (Marketing). I collected stamps, watched movies, TV... I dreamt of becoming an entertainer or movie star when I was young. I used to be very reserved in my younger days! But after I started exercising and building up my muscles, I became more confident.

I'm more sociable now. With all the videos I made, I feel more confident. I wanted to be different from my old self. I am being myself. You will change when you grow up.

HOOKED: Thanks for your time, Steven! Do you have anything you want to say to the readers of HOOKED?

SL: Happy Chinese New Year! And many good returns!

It's plain to see that the crab loving (chilli, black pepper, you name it, he likes it), Hei Bai Pei (chocolate and vanilla wafer sticks) chewing Steven Lim has many similarities to what one perceives as a "normal" person.

He likes eating at coffee shops, and he watches movies, as well as sports programmes. He obviously loves to sing (in the bathroom, he divulges) and he surfs the internet. He's a lot like the "rest of us," happy-go-lucky and hangs out with his army friends.

When asked for a photo, he gamely offered to pose with his motorbike. "My motorbike is very cool, you know!" he added enthusiastically.

So to people who want to be famous (like, or unlike Steven Lim), the guru of infamy has only this to say: "You can try, but it really depends on your luck. If entertaining is your hobby and you don't become famous, you don't lose anything in the end. You won't die with regrets."

Wise words from someone who has gotten adept at taking the sting out of negative comments thrown his way. Fame, by the example of Steven Lim, is not for the fainthearted. HOOKED
