The Ugly

She says:

        Yet, for a girl to be dating an older guy is still less "shocking" than for a guy to be dating an older woman. Perhaps it has a lot to do with how most would view the former as a "caring, older brother-younger sister" relationship, while the latter would just seem weird (case in point: the hoo-ha over the Ashton Kutcher-Demi Moore marriage).

        However, Woody Allen's marriage to Soon-Yi Previn was nonetheless widely frowned upon. While celebrity couples may not be the best examples, they are useful in reflecting society's views towards dating older people.

He says:

        Botox, plastic surgery, mesotherapy and even stem cell implants. The pursuit of that ever elusive ideal in achieving a state of physical perfection - youthful looking skin, fair with no trace of cellulite, taut and firm - is endless.

        In a society heavily steeped in the belief that young is good, old is bad, it is little wonder that women are pulling out the stops to look younger and hence, more "beautiful".

        Men are just as guilty of espousing this perception.

        In Singapore, certain social stigmas tend to associate themselves with a man dating an older woman. To date an older woman would reflect a level of inadequacy on his part to manage and maintain his lifestyle. "Toy Boys", "social escorts", and "sugar mummies" are terms which have been labeled on these age-mismatched men and women.

        To have the man, traditionally the provider and stronger of the two genders, be reduced to a state of dependence is viewed as unacceptable in our society.

        It is not difficult then to understand why such relationships are commonly met with a little cynicism and plenty of sniggering.

Conclusion

        At the end of it all, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. As Shakespeare so aptly puts it in Romeo and Juliet, "A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet." Clichéd but true nonetheless. 

        The desire for a partner for life, coupled with changing social times, has led both genders to select their partners on an exclusive basis. The challenge to remain desired and wanted no longer lies in the mere aesthetics of physical appearances. 

        Rather, it is in engaging and providing the other in a stimulating fashion, finding out what makes him/her tick, which really sets off the spark between the two.

        Boundaries such as age, race, religion and even gender no longer become so much of an issue as compared to the past. Hooked
