The advent
of fast food has made taste buds very happy, and arteries clogged up. Besides
speeding up the rate in which the numbers on that weighing scale jumps, fast
food decreases the time spent waiting to be fed (which is very important for
the hungry person who would settle for anything...FAST). As its name suggests,
fast food chains emphasize on the speed in which food is prepared. But how do
the four most popular fast food chains fare here in sunny Singapore?
McDonald's:
Arguably the
most famous of the lot; it sure seems like McDonald's is fast taking over the
world (they together with mouth-less cat that they sold, feeding into the Hello
Kitty craze that swept the nation years ago) with new restaurants sprouting out
around the island. They probably feel the need to fill every empty space on the
map with the iconic golden arch. The fast food chain believes in efficiency in
their production of food and used to offer customers a free item on their menu
if they could not serve up their orders in under a minute. And did we glue our
eyes to the hourglass willing the gravitational pull to increase manifold just
for that minute. It was a testament to their speed that they went ahead with
that campaign since the failure to feed a man in a minute would result in
serious losses that could wipe McDonald's from the face of the earth! (I
exaggerate surely.)
And of
course, who could forget those handheld electronic devices that allowed staff
to take orders within the queue that improved the efficiency of service. Technology
is very useful indeed.
Apart from
that, the chain that is monopolizing the fast food market (at least in
Singapore, judging by the fact that there is almost one across every street) is
doing pretty well in the area of speed with staff handing over a tray filled
with your heart's worst enemies faster than you can say "I'm lovin' it".
Speed: The
fastest of the lot with one hourglass out of five. The
ravenously-hungry-that-they-can-devour-an-elephant-NOW should heed the call of
the big red and yellow ‘M'.
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC):
Now why did
the chicken cross the road?
To get away
from the Colonel of course!
There are
two camps of chicken lovers; those who swear by finger lickin' good KFC, and
those who insist that the fried chicken at Popeye's is superior. Whether the
first group be right, or whether the first group be wrong, we say thumbs up for
the speed in which chicken is served, hot and crispy, original or spicy.
To the
hungry ones yearning for something other than the usual burger fare - find The
Colonel for a bucket of fried chicken for The Colonel rules the roost when it
comes to speed and chicken.
Speed: Two hourglasses
Burger
King:
Perhaps the
only item that would be served up in the same amount of time it takes for
McDonald's to serve up a whole meal would be their pies (unless the flavor
ordered is hidden somewhere among their ice cream in the freezer) and an extra
packet of chili sauce please. The home of the Whooper may carry great tasting
items on its menu but any slower and the time taken between ordering and finally
getting your hands on the King's products would make a hungry man see red. Any
slower and it would take the ‘fast' out of fast food.
Blessed are
the patient for they shall finally receive the king of burgers after standing
around the order area for what seems like an eternity. The not so patient shall
try not to succumb to the temptation of the melted cheese goodness of the
Mushroom Swiss burger and the golden fried onion rings; especially not at our
friendly Burger King at The Deck which requires quite a lot of patience.
Speed: Four
hourglasses make the King the loser when it comes to speed.
Long John
Silver's:
Captain Jack
Sparrow would feel right at home at this fast food chain with staff uniforms
looking pretty similar to his attire.
The fast
food seafood chain is doing well in the speed stakes with staff serving up batter
dipped seafood almost as fast as KFC does its chickens.
It seems
that the shrinking fish and chicken pieces are making customers more irate than
anything else. A hungry man may be quickly fed here but would probably leave
without being fully satisfied. No wonder the toiling of bells have became more
infrequent over the years.
Speed: Two
hourglasses
When it
comes to fast food, speed is of the essence and beside the convenience and accessibility
of the restaurant, consumers are likely to choose a chain over another
depending on how fast they perceive the chain to be. So unless the rest would
like the world to be plastered with golden arches, shortening the time that it
takes for customers to receive their orders would be ideal, as soon as
possible.
*Speed
measured on a scale of five hourglasses; the more hourglasses, the longer the
wait.
