Page 1 of 4 First off, I have to admit that I've never passed a NAFA test in all my years in the academic world. Participation in sports has simply never been interesting to me. As for maintaining a healthy lifestyle - I prefer to live life by the day.
After a year in NUS, the sports facilities have yet to leave a significant impression on me. There is the field and tennis court region, which merely form part of the landscape on my daily bus journeys. There is the MPSH (multi purpose sports hall), which to me should be renamed as the SPEH (single purpose exam hall).
All other facilities that exist in NUS were unchartered territory. Until today that is.
If shopping is a sport, I'll come here more often
Since I have established my ineptitude in effectively judging the true state of the sports facilities in our NUS, I felt that it would only be fair to ask members of the sports sub-clubs to give their verdict.
The list of facilities below are by no means exhaustive, but I would be (exhausted that is) by the time I am done reporting on these facilities.
Sculpt those muscles
Prior to stepping foot on the holy sports ground, I proceed to ask around for some directions to the NUS gym or weights room. I assumed that would be the one facility most popular with students, considering no special skills are needed to tone up cellulite, flaunt six-packs or burn away that 2000 calorie steak. And all that for free too.
After asking several passers-by, I came to the conclusion that the existence of the gym isn't very well known in NUS. This is quite strange, considering so many Singaporeans are willing to pay thousands in membership fees to overrated town gyms.
Why isn't a free service offered in school more popular than it currently is?
Dream on, this is NOT a school gym
According to Philip, the chairperson of the Health and Fitness club that organizes gym sessions for NUS undergraduates, for a school gym, it lacks essential equipment like a bench press and certain weight numbers of the free weights. Karen, the captain of the women's Track and Field team, confirmed this, explaining that this shortage of free weights meant that the Track and Field team could not effectively perform their intensive strength training and conditioning exercises.
Hmmm... how are we gonna train world class athletes that way?!
Whatever it is, just some advice for gym-goers: most athletes frequent the gym in the evenings, so unless your sole purpose of going to the gym is to ogle, steer clear of the gym after 5.
