Page 2 of 4 Swimming in school
Students of NUS will be glad to know that we are blessed with a true blue Olympic sized pool. According to Amos (a training coordinator from the Lifeguard Corps), it also comes with a special lane for weak swimmers, as well as a shallow (1.2m) and a deep end (2m).
Other than the occasionally slippery surface of the aging launch boards, the pool was in perfectly good condition. Chalk one up for you aquatic undergrads!
Yellow balls
The tennis courts were empty when I made my afternoon visit. This could have been due to the afternoon heat. Or maybe it's because the tennis courts are dotted with spots of sunken ground, resulting in puddles forming when it rains. The roots of surrounding trees have also "eaten" into some parts of the court grounds, making for quite an undulating surface.
But good news folks! Carson Goh (officer-in-charge of the tennis team) reassured us that there'll be a major renovation of the tennis courts in just two weeks. So keep your tennis rackets at home for the time being. If you don't mind the cost, head over to good old Kent Ridge Guild House for a smashing good time.
Made in NUS - outdoor squash
Outdoor squash you say? Baorong, captain of the ladies' squash team spills the beans and traces the development of this uniquely NUS sporting phenomenon...
Traditionally an indoor sport, playing squash in NUS has become LITERALLY a different ball game - no thanks to the leaky squash court roof. After years of usage, the surface of the floors in the squash courts is now more slippery than an ice-skating rink, constantly making players lose their footing.
Not raining men, just dripping water
That said, the worst thing about the squash courts has to be the gallery. Not only do the yellowed old-fashioned linoleum tiles immediately turn spectators off, but years of bird poop has accumulated and hardened. Gross!!!
Eew!
Thankfully, help is on the way. The SRC has finally realized the increasingly decrepit state of the squash courts and the courts are presently under renovation. Just like tennis players, squash lovers will have to head down to the pricey Guild House courts if you want to get your squash fix.
