"Rebuilding The Deck is good. It's already so old and its always cramped and hot. Besides, there's always too many people, and the demand is too high as compared to the supply of food. Stalls do not look nice and don't seem to be clean. Hopefully a new deck will solve all the problems and make it more efficient at peak hours, with more air-conditioning and more tables." - Tong Cheung Fong, ENG, Year 2
"I anticipate that longer queues during lunch hours at engine and business canteens are inevitable due to the crowd coming from the arts canteen. Unless there are proper measures being taken to handle this, it will take tremendous patience just to queue up for food." - Pang Jia Hui, ENG, Year 2
"Engine canteen will surely be more crowded. I will definitely miss the food at arts canteen. Stuff like the fish bee hoon, fish soup and the pasta too!" - William, FASS, Year 2
In addition, HOOKED also interviewed several stall vendors from The Deck. The three owners mentioned that their contract clearly stated that the renovations will take place within a specific time frame and has only just materialized. Basically, the more popular stalls (judging by the length of the queue) were given priority in setting up in the new canteen. However, this does not hold true for the less popular ones. And they are the stalls that are facing the greatest amount of uncertainty.
Fruit Juice Stall, Mr Henry Chan:
"Actually, we were quite pleased with the renovation. We are optimistic and look forward to new changes and improvements. The Deck has been around for so long and I think its time to upgrade and improve the facilities.
Financially, we aren't really affected as our son and daughter have both grown up and working now. Moreover, we have accumulated savings. Our main concern is the welfare of the students such as how are they going to settle their meals.
Regarding our plans for the next 10 months, we are looking into applying license to set up a pushcart to sell food in NUS. On the other hand, the 10 months period is not really long enough for us to look into other business ventures. Thus, we are pleased to do what we have been doing for the last few years."
The Olive Corner, Miss Kathie Chen:
"The leakage is terrible especially when it rains, so I actually welcome the renovation. Thankfully, I have another stall in the Engineering faculty, so I'll be tending that stall for the time being. After the renovations, the concept of my stall will be quite different from the rest, and I have been offered a place at the air conditioned area but I'm still considering if I should."
