How to Chill Out in NUS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nadia Arianna & Mallika Desai

Tired from all the walking around campus? Tired of carrying course-packs, textbooks and library books? Tired of all the deadlines? Then you need to be familiarized with the cozy corners of NUS where you can simply “plop” onto a sofa or a comfortable chair and de-stress.

Up late doing work? (I presume) Bus ride is too bumpy to catch some sleep? Train ride is too crowded and jerky? Someone else’s Ipod blasting incessantly bad music next to you keeping you up? HOOKED finds some comfy places over in school for you to chill out and get some shuteye.

The Central library has really nice cushioned chairs for you all to snug yourself into a ball and sleep rather comfortably. Those of us who are less limber can bring two comfy chairs together and have a nice little “bed” for ourselves. BE considerate though. Do not attempt this at peak hours of studying. Mornings and late nights will be just fine.

Perk Point at the library not only has the funkiest furniture but also a nice chirpy atmosphere to help you chill out. The buzzing noises of people gossiping and joking all around acts as a relaxing agent, pulling us back into reality and away from the depression of work overload.

sleep       Architecture students have nice little studios for their work. Handing up assignments the next day and it is… gasp! 1130pm? Do not bother trying to even run for that bus. You’ll never make it with your fatigue.

The little studios that these Archi students get are rather spacious. So, get on that table (it’s very sturdy) and create a nice place to sleep. Bring a pillow and stowaway your sleeping bag in your little locker. Fluff them up and sleep the night away. I’d be careful to make sure that everyone’s assignments are OFF the table before you lay down for the count.

If all else fails, find a friend who lives on campus and sneak away onto their bed for some shuteye. Buy them coffee in return (hah! Then they’d be more awake, and you’d get some more downtime on their beds.)

Munchie Monkey is another chilled out zone: delicious food, nice music and amazingly cozy sofas that you can sink your worries into. It’s a happening place where students go to treat themselves after a long day or week. It’s affordable too.

However, for those who are not inclined to feeling relaxed in a busy environment, quiet corridors at arts, science and engine faculties are amazing in the evenings. Empty tables to spread all your books onto, no happy people to be jealous off when burdened with work, and a nice breeze here and there depending on your luck, is the real deal. One of the better areas is the engine walkway that has an amazing view of the port and is closest to McDonalds.

When under pressure and stress from assignments and group projects, there is nothing better than watching movies to simply relax the mind. It takes you away from all the hassles of life and into a world of creativity and imagination. Furthermore if you share an intense passion of insightful movies and a need to discover yourself, the Counseling Center conducts Movie Musings.

They claim that watching these movies we experience the lives of characters we identify with. This discussion group aims at helping participants better understand themselves through the characters, scenes and situations. Over the past few weeks they watched documentaries and movies like “Slender Existence” and “No More Shame”. Keep a look out for the next free screenings at the Central Library, you might find it fascinating.
