How to Chill Out in NUS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nadia Arianna & Mallika Desai

Besides personal growth movie groups there are free screenings of movies made by NUS students through nuSTUDIOS Film Productions. Fetish 2006 that was held on 27th October screened four movies; “Slipper Story”, “Friday Morning”, “Hedgehog’s Complex” and “Goldfish”. These movies had a collective theme of revealing the intimate and hidden desires of people as well as the process of generating a need for something or someone. Entrance was free and the movies were screened at the University Cultural Center from 7pm onwards. Hence look out for such movie screenings to have a look at the creativity of your fellow-students as well as to simply get some breathing space from routine.

If you still want to catch more movies in these last weeks of mugging and rushing assignments, feel free to head down to your friendly Humanities Dept in Arts that has a few film modules this semester. However, as the semester is winding up, there are lesser chances for you to catch a movie on the “big screen” and with a whole load of other people.
xmen-rottentomatoes

Here’s a few for you to catch, before it ends! Go local and catch “Homerun” and “15” with your fellow Singapore Film students from 6-8pm at Lt 9 on the 6th of November. Want some action-packed films to get that lazy mind moving? Catch Superman and X-Men over at Lt 11 on the 6th and 13th of November respectively at 6-8pm. Note to crashers: be inconspicuous when “crashing” these screenings.

If you want some private time or “me” time with the films, most film modules offer you the chance to watch films that have been offered on the course, or leeway to borrow whatever you want from the library. Do a quick search on IVLE on the film modules your fellow schoolmates are doing. Hey, you can even help them with the research! All this is for the sake of educational purposes of course.

fooseball       The student lounge at YIH is the other hang out that now has new facilities that allow students to release their tensions through fun and games. New Foosball, Air Hockey and Pool tables have been installed into the student lounge and for one dollar a game students are able to enjoy momentarily without having to think about their deadlines. YIH also has the TV room that has become popular. Though it is small, if found free, a group of you could easily watch some mindless TV, chill in the air conditioning and relax in the cozy atmosphere.

Ever heard of the little theory (or was it proven? I forget) that mentions how water makes you happier? Well, go on down to the SRC swimming pool now, and get submerged! There’s really nothing like floating in the water and willing yourself away from the hectic papers and examinations and people.

Don’t really know how to swim? Well, just put on your bathing suits, and stay at the sides of the pool to relax in the cool water. There are some deck chairs scattered about, but relaxation comes so much better in the water. Alternatively, there is a “baby” pool, where you can be semi submerged and still be safe.

swim-stockxchange       Evenings are usually filled with very fit sports clubs members training, or other, along with many other students living around campus heading for a swim. Try to head over in the mornings or afternoons when it is less crowded. You sure as hell would not want other people taking up the pool side and splashing about can you? Tranquility is key.

Admission is free. Bring along your matric card for the lockers to keep your things safe.

So there you go, some of the places where you can head out and take a breather in the midst of this little rat race. Chill out! What are you waiting for? From all of us at HOOKED, Godspeed and good luck with the exams.  hooked

Not to appear anal, but please at least know that "lesser" is not to be used this way in the article. "Less chances" is the correct version.

The "R" codes on course-related films are there for a reason. In case the writers don't realise, students of these modules actually need to review the films regularly, in particular during this "NUStress" period, as "hooked" puts it. In some cases, only one copy of the film is available. If everyone starts impersonating as a student in a film module, where does that leave the students proper? Why make suggestions that add to their stress? There are plenty of films in the library you can borrow without needing module codes. Watch those instead.
