Gas Haus Food Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Lim

 customeriswrong

Yes that’s right, the customer is always wrong! That was one of the first things that kidnapped my attention when I entered the Haus. I had my share of offence on seeing that but hold it, yours truly was wrong! What about? Well, like me, you may think that there is only so much a bar-cafe can offer in its food menu. But viola! The customer’s wrong. This place is rawkin’ with great food. And I really mean rawkin’! A caveat: do not go before lectures(go on a weekend!) , this place is hard to part with once you set foot into it!

And I could go on and on and on… but have not intoduced you to the phenomenal Gas Haus!

untitled

Middle Road is no longer a no man’s land for some decent food.  There’s Gas Haus which, if you think has nothing more to it than its name, is a bar, restaurant and live music café all in one. Set in a Euro-Californian 2 storey coffeehouse, the food it serves is a smashing delight to the palate.

jimbeampizza

Chef Jeff preped up a few of the house’ specialities to fill my tummy, literally! Indeed, a heavenly escape from the academic, but sadly only for that divine 2 hours out of the back-to-back schedule which every other sad undergraduate have.

For a start, sizzling fresh from the oven was Jim Beam BBQ Chicken Pizza. In case you’re suspecting that your eyes are playing tricks on you, don’t fret. I did mention Jim Beam, on a pizza! It was a potent concoction of Jim Beam and BBQ sauce atop piping hot slices of Ham, Bacon and chicken. And oh, what’s pizza without spiced smoked Gouda cheese?  To complement this, a melt-in-your-mouth crust adds the ‘ormph’ factor to the pizza. I could hear the crisps as I was chewing, amidst the live music! This is definitely not your typical stuffed thick crust nor the Spizza thin ones. It’s somewhere in the middle, somewhow unmeasurable and somewhat, I want to put it simply as, smooth. Something that any olfactory and gastatory will be pleased at only $12.

tribaltunasandwich

Moving on, I feasted on the other house speciality- Tribal Tuna Wrap. It’s not as ordinary as Tuna amd burrito wrap. It’s not one of those wraps which you give a cursory glance at, roll your eyes as a matter of factly and go ‘ another wrap to cheat my money!’ It does not take a food connoisseur to taste the effort behind those meticulous hands which prepared it. The lettuce, tomatoes and Albacore White Meat Tuna carefully lined themselves in the finest quality of wrap. That’s not all! The secret of all ingredients was the juicy raisins blended with chunks of tuna and a generous helping of cheedar cheese with a dash of Tobasco. Before I forget, here it is, the Tribal tuna wrap is served chilled at an affordable price of $5.50!

Just as I was about to get high on pizzas and wrap, the kind bar tender offered me a drink companion. White Russian--Vodka, coffee liquer and fresh milk. My first time on a white Russian and although im not a big fan of alcohol, im sure many of you would agree that this is one cocktail recipe not to be missed!

Seeing that im not a big fan of alcohol (I think he read my mind!), the bar tender asked if he could whip up a chocolate smoothie for me. No more questions. Rejecting chocolate is like rejecting a CAP 5.0. The smoothie was so true to its name-- Triple Chocolate Orgasm. Nothing could be more apt than this. An orgasm like no other!

Authentic blend of Hershey’s chocolate syrup, Cadbury cocoa powder, whipped cream, Oreo biscuit and…everything chocolate going at $4.80! I could not ask for more. I thought to myself, that I would just soak in the music, the cosy aura that place exudes and forget the world for just a little while...But no! As though all that was not tantallizing anough, Chef Jeff crept up surreptitiously from behind and surprised me with dessert! Hello everyone, meet Torritos.Think nothing more of Ice Kachang nor mudpie nor apple crumble. Tickle your tastebuds with the exotic. Would anyone have thought that freshly grounded cinnamon, refined sugar and deep friend tortillas could coalesce to end off a meal on such a sweet note? If you hadn’t, for just $3.00, you could!

tripchocorgasm

And hey, eating is not just about the food, but it’s also the social components that are around it, right?  This place is definitely not lacking in that. The Jamwerkz Music Studio, located at the second level, is a place for musicians to meet. It offers 3 jamming studios with high quality instruments ranging from Marshall sound system to Sabian cymbals to DW full set drums. More importantly, for as low as $15/hr, you can book a room and jam your way to real music of tomorrow! Among the jammers they have 98.7fm-featured band Auburn’s Epiphany, Overdrive winners Psych 4 and Yamaha Asian Beat Finalists Project Ultrasound. You name it they have it.

Besides, did I mention that the main stage  of the café-bar has been graced by international luminaries such as American Drum and Bass Power troop EVOL INTENT, Australian Industrial Rockers DIVINE 9 and local stars Ronin, My Squared Circle, Bushmen, Great Spy Experiment, Deer Arson and much more!

mezzanine

If you’re not that musically inclined like me, stick to the pool and foosball table located at the Mezzanine at level 2! Or, take a stroll and admire the graffiti wall near the rest rooms! There’s something to do for everyone, I promise! Hooked

Quite a well-written review, I would say! Could someone shed some light on how exactly do we get to this restaurant? Near the Shaw House at Bugis? I believe it serves German delicacies by the way.
